The Probabilistic Nature of Extended-Range Predictions of Tropical Cyclone Activity and Tracks as a Factor in Forecasts of Tropical-Extratropical Interactions

چکیده

The overall project goal is to assess the skill of the probabilistic nature of mediumand extended-range forecasts of tropical cyclone activity and track over the tropical WPAC. Skill is examined with respect to processes associated with forcing by various tropical circulation factors, which are hypothesized to be the largest contributor to low-frequency variation in tropical cyclone activity and track type. Then, the impact of tropical cyclone activity on the mediumand extended-range forecasts over midlatitude regions downstream of recurving tropical cyclones is examined. For this objective, it is hypothesized that the interaction of the tropical cyclone outflow with the midlatitude circulation impacts the potential for downstream blocking and potential development of high-impact weather.

The Extratropical Transition of Tropical Cyclones

The objective is to investigate the physical processes that occur as a tropical cyclone interacts with the environment such that intensity and structure changes occur. Specific interactions being studied are with baroclinic environments in the midlatitudes during extratropical transition. During extratropical transition, radical changes to the storm structure occur as vertical wind shear and in...

Experimental Dynamical Seasonal Forecasts of Tropical Cyclone Activity at IRI

The International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) has been issuing experimental seasonal tropical cyclone activity forecasts for several ocean basins since early 2003. In this paper the method used to obtain these forecasts is described and the forecast performance is evaluated. The forecasts are based on tropical cyclone–like features detected and tracked in a low-resolution c...

Evolution of Tropical Cyclone Characteristics

The long-term goals are to understand how variabilities in the large-scale atmospheric environment and the internal tropical cyclone structure influence tropical cyclone track and intensity characteristics and define how these influences differ between developing, mature, and decaying tropical cyclones. During the initial stages of tropical cyclone development, structure and track characteristi...
